The organisation
This organisation is a true core tech company at heart, with a platform that a large part of the Netherlands interacts with daily, often without realising it. With their highly tangible products, they facilitate critical processes within, among others, healthcare, housing, mobility and financial security. The impact is so significant that multiple domains would come to a standstill without this platform.
The platform developed here is designed according to the latest standards. That's no surprise when you consider that their products are deeply embedded within their customers' core operations. This involves massive volumes of data, where accuracy is essential.
You'll be working within a modern event-driven microservices architecture, using technologies such as Java 21/25, Spring Boot, Kafka, Docker, Kubernetes, Elasticsearch and AWS.

The role
As Lead Java Developer, you'll join the team building a completely new messaging hub for all messaging that leaves and enters the platform, tens of millions of messages in total. Think of machine-to-machine traffic between systems, but also communication that ultimately reaches the customers of our customers. All of this needs to run supersecure.
The challenge lies, as elsewhere in the organisation, in scale and abstraction. There are countless different types of messages and communication flows, and the art is to build one generic, robust architecture and solution for this, so you never have to build custom work case by case.
As the team's technical figurehead, you're the primary point of contact for your team members on technical matters. You'll also work closely with tech leads from other teams, staff engineers and architects to help shape the platform's technical direction.
The organisation is also exploring how AI can play a role in making the platform smarter, for example in modelling complex product logic and supporting decision-making. This is still in an exploratory phase, leaving room for you to help shape it.
Growth opportunities
You'll have the opportunity to grow towards Staff Engineer, Architect or, eventually, Engineering Manager.
What is required?
- Completed Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science or similar
- Minimum 7 years of professional experience as a Software Engineer
- Experience with modern JVM languages such as Java, Kotlin or Scala
- Experience with technical leadership or mentoring engineers
- Experience with system design is a strong plus
- Experience with Spring Boot or Quarkus is a plus
- Experience with microservices architectures
- Experience with Elasticsearch is a plus
- Experience with Kafka and event-driven architectures is a plus
- Experience with cloud (AWS and/or Azure) is a plus
