The Organization: Building the digital infrastructure for international mobility
This well-funded mobility tech scale-up is digitizing a traditionally fragmented international mobility infrastructure. Through a scalable, API-driven platform, they introduce structure, transparency, and reliability into a time-critical environment. They operate at the intersection of real-time orchestration, international scalability, and data-driven optimization, building a digital infrastructure layer for global mobility. Currently they are active in over 100 counties already! With an experienced management team skilled in scaling technology companies, the organization has rapidly secured a strong international market position and is now active in the majority of countries worldwide.
The next phase focuses on further international scaling, with the ambition to grow the platform by a 5x increase in user volume. At the same time, the AI-first approach is being deepened, integrating AI structurally into both the product and the engineering workflow. AI is not treated as an additional feature, but as a core structural asset of the organization.
This is an environment where engineers are trusted to think beyond their immediate scope. Growth introduces complexity, and complexity requires people who can create clarity and direction. At the same time, engineering here is not a solitary activity. The Role: Staff Engineer Java Amsterdam
As a Staff Engineer Java, you step in at a defining moment. The foundation is strong and the architecture is modern, but the next phase of growth brings a different level of complexity. The platform continues to expand in scope, usage and organisational reach, requiring deeper technical judgement from within engineering. Within this role, you contribute to decisions that shape how the platform evolves over time. Not every challenge arrives as a clearly defined technical task. Some questions relate to architecture, system boundaries or long-term technical direction. Others require bringing clarity where multiple teams, services or priorities intersect.
You will work across the broader system rather than focusing on a single service. Performance, reliability, operational impact and the long-term maintainability of the platform are constant considerations. Architecture here is not about designing ideal models, but about understanding the consequences of technical decisions within a living product environment. Your influence extends beyond the code you write. By bringing structure to complex problems, clarifying technical direction and helping teams reason through difficult trade-offs, you contribute to raising the overall engineering level of the organisation.
AI will increasingly become part of both the platform and the engineering workflow. The challenge is not experimentation for its own sake, but identifying where AI meaningfully improves how systems are built and how the product creates value.
What is required?
- A completed Technical HBO or University degree
- 7+ years of professional Java experience, preferably Java 21+
- Experience with Spring Boot
- Experience with implementing AI in product & workflow
- Experience with microservices architectures
- Experience with Kafka or similar messaging systems
- Experience with Docker and Kubernetes
- Experience with Cloud platforms such as AWS, GCP or Azure
- Experience with CI/CD pipelines
- Clean coding en test automation
- Experience with data analytics tooling like DataDog
- Architectural system-level thinking
- Experience mentoring or technically leading engineers
